A middle-aged guy's approach to life

The Five pillars
The thoughts I’m about to share throughout this website reflect my impressions as an ordinary middle-aged guy on life and what I believe should be of importance. I’ll be touching on five broad areas: spirituality, family, community/nature, health, and wealth. These aspects have been written about countless times, but what’s different here is my approach and how I apply these concepts in my own life.

I have come to regard these five aspects as crucial for achieving and sustaining a happy life—I call them my five pillars. For me, there exists an interdependence among each pillar; to benefit from one, you must have nurtured the principles of the others. Simply being wealthy does not mean happiness; a balance among these pillars is essential.

Life can get you down
In summary, I resonate with Kanye "Ye" West, who remarked on the Lex Friedman podcast that "the greatest gift is life itself." Yet, there are moments when I question this gift and wonder about the purpose of our efforts. Especially when striving to balance numerous demands only to be blindsided by an unexpected change or challenge. These struggles often weigh heavily on me, prompting reflections of .... why do I even try.

Despite these challenges, I find that making a concerted effort to think positively significantly impacts my outlook. I acknowledge that this approach doesn't universally solve every issue—positive thinking can falter in certain situations, such as coping with the death of a loved one.

However, where we find it hard in general to be positive, Dr. Smitha Bhandari, MD, suggests that consistent practice can aid in cultivating a positive mindset, likening the brain to a muscle that requires training.

An open-minded outlook
From the outset of my life, I was fortunate to have a secure and nurturing home—a sanctuary where I could find solace amid life's unpleasantness. My outlook on life is shaped by my unique experiences, beginning from my time in the womb to the present moment of expressing these thoughts. It's crucial for you as a reader to recognize that your viewpoints are similarly shaped by your life experiences. I strive to maintain an open mind, welcoming diverse perspectives to challenge and enrich my own. For instance, I once had to accept that the people on TV weren't in TV land. Being truthful and honest with oneself, even when it involves self-reflection, proves invaluable on the path to happiness.

If the five pillars I've outlined are akin to pills, then open-mindedness acts as the essential water—comprising truthfulness and honesty—that you take with the pills. This means approaching the five pillars with a truthful and open mind. When confronted with new information that challenges my existing beliefs, I force myself not to hastily accept or dismiss it. Instead, I reflect on how this new insight might impact my life in relation to the five pillars. If it appears beneficial, I cautiously integrate it; if not, I set it aside for now, maybe additional information later might shed better light on it. The goal is to use whatever comes, to maintain my pursuit of happiness, in concert with the pillars.

I view maintaining an open mind as a commendable trait that contributes to my ability to navigate challenging times. It's tempting to deceive oneself and inflate one's ego, but ultimately, our receptivity to new information can fundamentally alter our perspective on life. This shift influences our actions, thereby steering our trajectory toward a fulfilling life.

The benefit of openmindedness
I emphasize the importance of mindset because only when we embrace new ideas and different perspectives does any advice—whether mine or others'—become truly valuable. I do not present my words as absolute truths. It's imperative to develop your approach to life grounded in sound principles and informed decisions. Maintaining a healthy frame of mind when confronting life's challenges is very important. Through personal experience, I've learned that the answers we seek are within reach if we are willing to acknowledge and embrace them.

In conclusion, the five pillars I advocate—spirituality, family, community/nature, health, and wealth—form the foundation of a fulfilling life. By fostering interdependence among these pillars and embracing an open mind, we can navigate life's complexities with resilience and purpose. Remember, the journey toward happiness is unique for each of us; the key lies in cultivating a mindset that fosters growth, understanding, and a balanced approach to life and its challenges.
